Two stolen antique icons returned in Tver

Two antique icons, stolen from the Nilo-Stolobensky Hermitage in the town of Ostashkov in the Tver region, have been handed over to representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church in Tver, according to a representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Irina Volk.

In March 2016, two eighteenth century icons of St. Nil of Stolobensk, one with the monastery in the background, were stolen from the monastery, reports RIA-Novosti. A criminal case of theft was opened and in December 2016 a suspect was detained by operatives of the main criminal investigation department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The detainee was a Moscow resident, born in 1955.

“Today in Tver occurred the solemn transfer of two antique icons with the image of St. Nil Stolobensk which had been stolen from the stolen from the holy Nil Hermitage in Ostashkhov in the Tver region. Today the sacred objects were returned to representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church,” Volk said.

Persistent efforts to find the precious icon continued for over ten years but with no result. In 2016, by a miracle of God it was found by Levon Nersesyan, research assistant of the State Tretyakov Gallery, in a private collection in Venice.
