Ukrainian Church in 2018: 7 new monasteries, dozens of new churches, 89 new monastics, 100+ new clergy

On December 7, during the final meeting of the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in 2018, His Eminence Metropolitan Anthony of Boryspil and Brovary, the chancellor of the UOC, reported on the life of the Church over the previous year.

According to Met. Anthony’s information, 7 new monasteries and dozens of new churches were established, 89 new monastics were tonsured, and more than a hundred new clergy were ordained, reports the site of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

In particular, 7 new monasteries were created: 2 for men and 5 for women.

The new men’s monasteries are the Holy Spirit Monastery in the Dnipropetrovsk Diocese, and the Holy Transfiguration Monastery in the Voznesensk Diocese.

The new convents are the Monastery of the Venerable-Martyr Grand Duchess Elizabeth in the Boryspil Diocese, the Holy Protection Monastery in the Gorlovka Diocese, the Monastery of St. Xenia of St. Petersburg in the Chernovitsko-Bukovina Diocese, St. Nicholas Monastery in the Kherson Diocese, and the Theotokos-Gorbanovka Monastery in the Poltava Diocese.

Additionally, 89 faithful took monastic vows in 2018, bringing the total to 4,501 monks and nuns in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

The number of parishes increased to 12,092 religious communities—23 more than last year. Accordingly, the number of clergy increased by 126 from 12,283 to 12,409.

Moreover, the number of students in the Church’s theological institutions rose from 1,333 to 1,415.

In 2017, the Church grew by 52 parishes, 249 clergy, and 97 monastics.
