Crete, July 19, 2019

The Holy Provincial Synod of Crete has expressed its deep condolences and sympathy to the family and friends of Suzanne Eaton, a 60-year-old American scientist who was raped and murdered on July 2 while attending a conference at the Orthodox Academy on the island.

Eaton was a respected scientist who worked for the prestigious Max Planck Institute for Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics in Dresden, Germany. The hierarchs also offered their condolences to the members of the international and local university community, reports Romfea.

The Synod notes that Eaton made a great contribution to research and science and also had a particular love for the island of Crete, and also congratulates the Crete police, Security Corps, army, and volunteers for their decisive contribution to the case.

The Church of Crete also re-emphasizes the need for absolute respect for the sanctity and value of human life and reminds of every man’s responsibility to contribute to peaceful coexistence on the basis of respect and dignity.

Dr. Eaton was out for a run when a man hit her twice with his car in order to sexually abuse her. He then put her in his car and drove her to an old German bunker 6 miles away where he raped her and discarded her body through a ventilator shaft, reports Keep Talking Greece.

Eaton’s body was discovered on July 9 thanks to a massive operation involving police and volunteers.

A married 27-year-old father of two and son of an Orthodox priest has allegedly confessed to the crime.

A number of remembrances of Suzanne have been posted on the site of the Max Planck Institute.
