Diptychs of Greek Church for 2020 printed without mention of Epiphany Dumenko

Athens, December 23, 2019

Photo: oukraniko.blogspot.com Photo: oukraniko.blogspot.com The new diptychs for the Greek Orthodox Church in 2020 have been printed, without mention of the so-called “Orthodox Church of Ukraine” or its primate Epiphany Dumenko, reports the Greek outlet Oukraniko.

The new publication includes the name of His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine and the other bishops of the canonical Ukrainian Church, but there is no indication that the “bishops” of the OCU are to be included among the canonical hierarchs of the Church.

The publication does include the names of the new hierarchs of Phthiotis, Lemnos, and Kalavryta, who were elected by the Greek Bishops’ Council on October 11, notes Oukraniko.

On October 12, the Bishops’ Council recognized the Patriarch of Constantinople’s right to grant autocephaly in Ukraine, which Metropolitan Hierotheos (Vlachos) told the press amounted to a recognition of the OCU, though this interpretation was rejected by other hierarchs.

Moreover, the council, “caused excitement and noise among bishops, clergy, and believing laity, and many of them questioned the fact of any Synodal decision,” writes Oukraniko.

The Council also empowered Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens to further handle the matter on behalf of the Greek Church, and in a letter of October 21, he officially recognized Epiphany Dumenko as a canonical primate and entered into communion with him.

He first commemorated the schismatic primate Dumenko on November 10.

The decision of the majority of the hierarchs of the Greek Church to throw their weight behind Constantinople and its invasion of Ukrainian Church territory and the decision of Archbishop Ieronymos, the President of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece, to formally recognize the OCU and begin commemorating its primate has caused great consternation among the clergy and faithful throughout Greece.

As OrthoChristian has noted many times, the Greek Church is in a unique situation where a large portion of its bishops, who are fully involved in making decisions for the Greek Church, are actually hierarchs of the Patriarchate of Constantinople. That is, the Greek Church has no ability to make decisions without input from Constantinople.

Was it a printing error? Perhaps they will issue an erratum. Happy holidays and seasons greetings to all.

I wonder why this is? Is it because it was not a vote of all of the bishops of the CoG? Maybe they did not expect so much of a backlash among the clergy and faithful? It is good that he was not added and hopefully the hierarchs will meet in February to hash this out once and for all
