His Beatitude Archbishop Chrysostomos of Cyprus departed for America on Monday to undergo liver cancer treatment at a specialized medical center.

His trip comes after completing a round of chemotherapy in Cyprus. He is being accompanied by his personal neurosurgeon and the director of the Archdiocesan office, according to a statement from the office.

According to orthodoxia.info, His Beatitude was to be welcomed in the U.S. by Archbishop Elpidophoros of the Greek Archdiocese of America, who spoke with him on the telephone.

The Archbishop said that his treatment would last 10 days, noting that he had scheduled a meeting of the Holy Synod for February 12.

A medical announcement is expected to be issued after Abp. Chrysostomos’ admission to the medical center.

In October 2018, the Cypriot primate initially announced that he had been suffering from cancer since that summer and underwent laparoscopic surgery to remove two tumors. Upon his return to Cyprus, he began chemotherapy, and in March 2019, he announced that he was cancer free.

It late August it was discovered that his cancer had returned and a new cycle of chemotherapy began, continuing through late-December.
