Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church expresses his condolences over tragedy in SlovakiaHis Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia expressed the following condolences to the President of Slovakia Ivan Gašparovič upon the tragic death of innocent people in Bratislava on 30 August 2010. Your Excellency: My heart pained when I learned of a tragic incident in Bratislava leaving innocent people dead and injured, including women and children. I offer my sincere condolences to you, the inhabitants of Bratislava and all people of Slovakia. I pray, together with the believers of the Russian Orthodox Church, for the rest of the victims' souls and for spiritual strength of those who lost their near and dear ones and for a speedy recovery of the injured. May the All-Merciful Lord give solace to all the afflicted. With sincere sympathy, /+Kirill/ Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia On August 30, 2010, a quiet suburb of Bratislava turned into the site of a shooting rampage the like of which Slovakia has never experienced before. A 48-year-old resident of Devнnska Novб Ves, described by his neighbours as taciturn and solitary, shot dead seven people, including six members of a family, which included Roma and non-Roma members, before killing himself, reports the Slovak Spectator. In Slovakia, the tragedy will result in some legislative changes as Lipšic's Interior Ministry is now working on a bill which would prohibit automatic rifles even for sports-related purposes. Conversely, Slovakia's police force, as a direct result of the drama, will be better armed: as of September 1, all on-duty units will have automatic weapons at their disposal. Conditions for gun ownership licences will also be made stricter, with those holding licences being required to undergo psychological assessment every five years. 03 / 09 / 2010
