Byzantine Art Travels to the US

Washington, May 15, 2013

Two film productions, one from the National Gallery of Art in Washington and one from the Greek Ministry of Culture, will be made at archaeological sites and monuments in Greece in the coming months. The purpose is the production of a film entitled, Heaven and Earth: Art of Byzantium from Greek Collections, which will be screened as part of the exhibition, that will be presented from October 6, 2013 until March 2, 2014 in the National Gallery and from April 9 to August 25, 2014 at the J. P. Getty Museum in Los Angeles.

“The two productions will complement each other, given that each one will have its own version. Our concept is more about the historical continuity of Byzantine heritage and how it is expressed in modern Greece,” said the General Secretary of Culture Lina Mendoni, on May 14 during the Central Archaeological Council’s meeting, which gave the green light to the request of the U.S. museum.

Mendoni, who recently completed her visit to Washington, stated as well that the shootings of the General Secretariat of Culture will be held in six cities with important Byzantine monuments, namely Athens, Thessaloniki, Philippi, Kastoria, Mistra and New Anchialos.
The film will be screened as part of a major exhibit prepared feverishly by both parties and aims at promoting Greece on the other side of the Atlantic. The film will frame other events as well, including a special exhibition with works by younger artists inspired by the Byzantium and the speeches that will take place at the Greek Studies Center at Harvard.
