St Nicolas Monastery of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Patriarchate of Moscow) has burnt to the ground in the village of Kholmovka of the Bakhchysarai district, the Ukraine, reports Foma in the Ukraine.

According to the Monastery's Abbot Fr. Viktor, the official reason of the fire is spontaneous combustion.

"We were undertaking a complete reconstruction of the roof. The firefighters have learned that the fire was caused by the wiring igniting," he said.

According to the Abbot, the firefighters arrived on the site of occurrence after 40 minutes. In that short time, "the monastery burnt to the ground": "Only the walls have remained. St Nicolas Church, the Church of Christ the Savior, cells for pilgrims and the brethren's cells have burned down," related Fr. Viktor.

The Monastery's Abbot himself was taken to the hospital on August 13 with pre-heart attack angina.
