Afghan parliamentarian proposes introduction of death penalty for adoption of Christianity

Kabul, September 10, 2013

A deputy of the parliament in Afghanistan Nazir Ahmad Hanafi has proposed introducing the death penalty for those who denounce Islam and adopt Christianity, according to Sharia law, reports InfoCatolica.

In the view of the deputy, this should help stop the rapid growth of Christianity among Afghans in their native land as well as abroad.

"There are mass conversions of Afghan people to Christianity in India. This is an offense to the Islamic law and, according to the Koran, it must be punished," said the parliamentarian.

The proposal of Nazir Ahmad Hanafi has followed after the television program on growth of Christianity in Afghanistan.

Earlier, another member of the Parliament of Afghanistan shared his information that in India, where thousands of Afghan refugees were living, a Christian community called, "Church of Afghans", opened, its members being former residents of Kabul.

Another member of the parliament in Afghanistan, Abdul Latif Pedram, spoke with the statement in which he said that the reason of rapid growth of Christianity was in the presence of the USA in Afghanistan.

Moreover, the president of the parliament Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi has condemned any activities that promote spreading of Christianity in the country and has charged the National Security Committee "to work on this issue seriously".

Afghan Islamic leaders consider the growth of Christianity to be a threat for state security. Their warnings of Christianity's influence have often been heard lately. Specifically, the Islamic council of Afghanistan has "with concern" informed the president Hamid Karzai on the increase of the number of foreign workers, who confess Christianity, in Afghanistan.
