Russia proposes discussion of the issue of defense of Christianity within the framework of OSCE

Athens, November 25, 2014

At a meeting with the Russian journalists after the political consultations in Athens, the Russian Federation’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Alexei Meshkov said that Russia considered it necessary to combine efforts for the purpose of defending Christianity and the Christian shrines worldwide, first of all, in the Middle East and in North Africa, reports RIA-Novosti.

“With our deep religious traditions, Russia and Greece could do many things together. We expect that defending Christian values will be among the issues to be discussed at the forthcoming OSCE (Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe) Ministerial Council in Basel, Switzerland,” A. Meshkov said. The meeting of foreign affairs ministers will be held on December 4-5, 2014.

According to Meshkov, Russia does not contrast Christianity with any other religions. “Conferences against xenophobia, islamophobia have already been held within the framework of OSCE. Today, when Christians are again being persecuted, churches are being destroyed in the world, I believe there are good grounds for stating this question,” Meshkov noted.
