Thorhild church destroyed by fire

Edmonton, Canada, February 28, 2015

A church in a small Hamlet north of Edmonton has been destroyed by fire.

Fire broke out at the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Sts. Peter & Paul in Thorhild just before noon Saturday.

Thorhild County fire chief Nick Kuzyk said the church, which was built in the 1940s, will be a total loss.

“Any old building that has history is going to hurt the community,” Kuzyk said Saturday. “Lots of babies baptized there, weddings, funerals. It was a landmark.”

While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, Kuzyk said an electrical issue may be to blame.

Thorhild is located about 80 kilometres north of Edmonton.
