A Chapel in Greece Dedicated to St. John Maximovitch

May 26, 2015

According to Romfea.gr, on Sunday 24 May 2015 the door-opening ceremony for a sacred chapel dedicated to St. John Maximovitch, who was the Bishop of Shanghai and later Archbishop of San Francisco of the Russian Church Abroad and reposed in 1966, took place in the Church of Saint Anna in Katerini.

The ceremony took place by His Eminence Metropolitan George of Kitros, Katerini and Platomonos, together with the priests of the parish and other priests of the Metropolis.

A portion of one of the sacred vestments is kept in the Church of Saint Anna, which was brought to the parish from America by Fr. Demetrios Golias, the parish priest.

His Eminence stressed that the door-opening ceremony of each sacred temple is an opportunity to renew the soul, which is a temple of the Holy Spirit.

Feeling an utter triumph in my soul, that I had spoken to a saint, I turned to Fr. Vladimir for further information about him, Archbishop John. But I heard nothing of what my dear benefactor Fr. Vladimir was telling me then, due to my excitement over having met a man not of this world.

"Sanctity is not just a virtue. It is an attainment of such spiritual heights, that the abundance of God's grace which fills the saint overflows on all who associate with him. Great is the saint's state of bliss in which they dwell contemplating the Glory of God. Being filled with love for God and man, they are responsive to man's needs, interceding before God and helping those who turn to them." Thus describing the ancient Saints, Vladyka John simultaneously summarized his own spiritual attitude which made him one of the greatest Saints of our time.

There is also a convent in Greece, that has holy items that belonged to Saint John Maximovitch. They also have a tiny holy relic as well. The monastery is called Saint Nektarios Monastery, in Trikorfo Fokidos. About 2.5 hour drive from Athens. Ive been there many times myself.
