Phnom Penh, October 19, 2015

On Saturday October 10, 2015, at the St. George’s Church at the Bulgarian Embassy in Phnom Penh (a temporary church of the Orthodox community in the Cambodian capital) thirteen Khmer (inhabitants of Cambodia) were received into the Orthodox Church through Baptism. This was performed at their request following a period of catechization, reports representative office of the Russian Orthodox Church in Thailand.

The oldest of the newly baptized group is thirty-two years old, the youngest is two and a half years old.

All other Orthodox Khmer came to this happy event of the Orthodox community. In this way they wished to support their brothers and sisiters and to share the joy of Baptism with them.

The sacrament of Baptism was performed with full immersion. The newly baptized Khmer received the following names: Charissimus, Sidonius, Virius, Avim, Rodian, Samonas, Sira, Natalia, Sophia, Kyra, Larisa, Mara and Anna. The servants of God Dionysius and Maria Sinan became their godparents.

On October 11 at the Sunday Divine Liturgy all those baptized received Holy Communion. After the Liturgy, the acting rector of the Orthodox parishes of the Moscow Patriarchate in Cambodia addressed them with words of encouragement, after which parish sponsors arranged a festal dinner for everybody on the occasion of the Baptism.

It has also been reported that the representation of the Russian Orthodox Church in the Kingdom of Thailand published a prayer-book in Khmer. It was more than a year’s work of an action group which consisted of Orthodox Khmer as well as believers from traditionally Orthodox countries living in the Kingdom of Cambodia. D. Nikitin together with Hieromonk Paisius (Ipate) took an active part in the translation and preparation of publication of the prayer-book.
