His Holiness Patriarch Alexei II prayerfully honored in Moscow

February 23, 2016, the 87th anniversary of the birthday of His Holiness Patriarch Alexei II, Metropolitan Arseny of Istra, the first Moscow vicar to the patriarch of Moscow and all Russia, administrator of the Central and Southern vicariates of the capital, served a Divine Liturgy and Pannikhida in Theophany Cathedral, where is buried the fifteenth primate of the Russian Orthodox Church.

His Eminence concelebrated with the rector of Theophany Cathedral Archpriest Alexander Ageikin, and other Moscow clergy.

  

Liturgical hymns were sung by the choir of Theophany Cathedral under the direction of director Ekaterina Loginova.

Abess of the Nativity of the Theotokos Stavropegial Monastery Igumena Viktoria (Perminova) along with the sisters of the convent were also present to pray.

On Friday morning, December 5, 2008, His Holiness, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, Alexei II, departed to the Lord, after governing the Russian Orthodox Church for eighteen years. The Patriarch was eighty years old when he reposed his Patriarchal residence located in the Moscow suburb of Peredelkino. In accordance with the Rule of the Russian Orthodox Church, there will be an emergency meeting of the Holy Synod of Bishops, at which a Locum Tenens of the Patriarchal Throne will be elected. The Locum Tenens will govern the Russian Church until a new Patriarch is elected, and will head the Funeral Commission.
