Montenegro’s government and the Serbian Orthodox Church are in a new standoff after the Church ignored a recent ruling to hand over the church of St Demetrius in the centre of the capital, Podgorica, to the state.
After a three-year dispute between the government and Church over ownership of ecclesiastical property, the court in a repeat proceeding gave the Church two weeks to implement the ruling.
As the deadline expired, the Church still seemed to be holding on to the former royal chapel of the Petrovic dynasty.
"We have appealed the verdict in the Higher Court. We regularly celebrate Liturgy in St. Demetrius Chapel", the Serbian Orthodox Church rector of Podgorica, Velibor Dzomic, told BIRN.
