President of Kenya posthumously awards Muslim killed defending Christians

Nairobi, April 4, 2016

The president of Kenya Uhuru Kenyatta has posthumously awarded the Muslim teacher Salah Farah who was seriously wounded at the end of 2015 shielding Christians and died in January 2016 at Nairobi Hospital, reports Blagovest.info.

In December 2015 terrorists from the Al-Shabaab Somali-based militant group attacked a bus travelling from Nairobi to Mandera which is situated near the border with Somali. The jihadis ordered the Muslims to move aside, intending to shoot the Christians. However, some of the Muslims would not walk away and even formed a human shield between the Christians and the terrorists.

“Either kill all of us or free all of us,” one of the Muslims told the gunmen.

In the end the terrorists freed the hostages, but not before opening fire, killing the driver of the truck which had been stopped with the bus and wounding several people.

Among the wounded was Salah Farah: he was taken to the capital’s hospital, but the doctors were unable to save his life. The courageous teacher passed away some while later, leaving a pregnant wife and four children.

During the ceremony at the Kenyan Parliament the country’s president posthumously gave Farah the highest state award for his act of courage.

“Salah Farah was killed defending people whom he did not personally know,” said Uhuru Kenyatta. “However, he believed these people had the right of freedom of religion and that their lives were holy.”

Farah’s act of self-sacrifice, in the view of the head of the state, “reminds all of us that we must defend our freedoms.” “I want to say to his children that the self-sacrifice of their father will never be forgotten,” said the president in conclusion, symbolically awarding the killed teacher the order which is given in Kenya only to those who performed great services for their homeland.

In January of this year, soon after the murder of Farah, another Kenyan Muslim, 26-year-old Abdullahi Derou, started a fundraising campaign in social networks to support the family of the killed teacher. He hopes that the funds raised will suffice for purchasing a plot of land and building a house for Salah Farah’s widow and children.

“He died serving his motherland, shielding his brothers Christians,” said A. Derou in his interview with the Al-Jazeera TV channel. “He is a symbol of our unity. His brave deed has become a source of inspiration for many.”
