Holding palm fronds and flowers, thousands of Romanians took part in processions and services as they celebrated Orthodox Palm Sunday.

In Bucharest, dozens of priests dressed in gold-colored vestments led a procession outside the Romanian Orthodox patriarchal cathedral to mark the Sunday before Pascha when Jesus made a triumphal entry into Jerusalem.

Worshippers of all ages joined processions at churches throughout Romania. More than 85 percent of Romanians are Christian Orthodox and there has been a faith revival in recent years.

In the village of Herasti, in southern Romania, believers gathered for a traditional memorial in honor of the dead. Orthodox believers met at the village cemetery at midnight, lit fires at the graves and shared food in memory of their dead relatives.

This year there is a five week difference between the day Western Christians celebrate Easter and Orthodox Pascha. The Orthodox Church follows the Julian calendar, and the Catholic and Protestant Churches adhere to the Gregorian calendar, meaning they often celebrate Easter and other feast days on different dates.

Among the many portraits of the confessors, one will be found in particular that is recalled with reverence by all and is considered a saint: Valeriu Gafencu. Nicknamed “the saint of the prisons” by Father Nicolae Steinhardt in a truly inspired moment, Valeriu Gafencu was one of the more impressive figures who lived an admirable spiritual life amidst prison conditions.

"One’s profession or dignity does not represent an obstacle for Christian life and faith. Do you think that in our days there are no new martyrs revealed? In Middle-Eastern countries the pitiless sword of Islam cuts down authentic Christians and counts them in the same army of Great Martyr St. Demetrios. Because our saint was and is an imitator of Christ, it would be best for us to establish ourselves in the likeness of Christ; let us imitate the saints, according to the word of St Paul the Apostle: Therefore I urge you, imitate me, (as I imitate Christ)."
