July 31 the residents of Sarov greeted a new sacred object. In the church of St. John the Forerunner the dean of the Sarov district of the Nizhny Novgorod diocese, after the festive Divine Liturgy, presented an icon on which is depicted the righteous martyr Eugene (Botkin)—doctor to the martyr Tsar Nicholas II, executed in 1918 together with the royal family in Ekaterinburg and recently ranked among the saints. The icon was painted for the church being built in honor of the Royal Martyrs.

The icon was brought to Sarov by Vladimir Nebolsin, the general director of “PharmEnterprise” Ltd. which is engaged in the research and development of innovative medicines, and Alexander Chuchalin, a leading Russian therapist, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and director of the Moscow Research Institute of Pulmonology, one of the founders of the modern school of localized pulmonology, under whose direction in 2006 was conducted Russia’s first successful bilateral lung transplantation.

Until the completion of the Royal Martyrs’ church in Sarov the icon of the martyred doctor Eugene (Botkin) will be kept in the church of the Great-Martyr and Healer Panteleimon in the hospital complex. Doctors and patients of clinical hospital №50 and all the townspeople can turn to the newly-glorified saint in prayer.
