London, August 13, 2003
On August 13 after the Divine Liturgy the funeral service for Metropolitan of Sourozh Anthony was held in the Cathedral of the Dormition and All Saints in London. With the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Alexis it was celebrated by Metropolitan of Minsk and Slutsk Filaret, patriarchal exarch of all Belarus. Metropolitan Anthony was buried at the Brompton Cemetery in the southeast of the British capital.
At the funeral service the address of His Holiness Patriarch Alexis to Bishop Basil of Sergievo, the clergy and faithful of the Diocese of Sourozh was read out. It reads: "A man who truly became a father and friend for many people has left this world; a heart that burned with love for God and His Holy Church has ceased to beat; the mouth of a tireless preacher of the truth of the Gospel has fallen silent: with special poignancy we now hear the bitter words of the holy prophet David, 'The days of man are as grass, he flourisheth as the flower of the field' (Ps. 102, 15)."
In his words about Metropolitan Anthony the Patriarch expressed his assurance that "through his death, as through his life, 'Christ is magnified', since, according to the word of the apostle, for every faithful servant of God, 'to live is Christ - to die is gain' (Phil. 1, 20-21)." In his address the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church expressed "deep sympathy to the Right Reverend hierarchs, the clergy and faithful of the Diocese of Sourozh and to all the spiritual children of the deceased archpastor." "In spirit, I give the last kiss to the deceased archpastor and our fellow-minister and I pray for the repose of his soul" - said Patriarch Alexis. His address is published in full at the site of the Sourozh diocese.
The funeral service was attended by the clergy and the faithful of the Diocese of Sourozh headed by the local primate Bishop Basil (Osborn), British public figures, Charge d'Affaires of Russia in Great Britain Alexander Kramarenko, Charge d'Affaires of Republic of Belarus in Great Britain Evgeny Bogomazov, as well as archbishop of Canterbury Rouen Williams. He emphasized that Metropolitan Anthony "contributed a lot into the life of the Christian community in Great Britain during half a century, his teaching and ministry enriched the Christian Church as a whole", ITAR-TASS reports.
The day before, on August 12 in the London Cathedral at the coffin of Metropolitan Anthony Metropolitan Filaret celebrated the Great Panikhida along with Archbishop Anatoly of Kerch, Archbishop Innocent of Korsun, Bishop Basil of Sergievo and the priests of the Diocese of Sourozh. After the funeral service Vladyka Filaret addressed the people who prayed for the repose of the recently deceased Metropolitan Anthony with words of concern and sympathy, "Orthodox Encyclopedia" reports.

In his speech at the tomb Metropolitan Filaret said: "Life of the reposed Vladyka reflected tragedy and glory of the last and current century: many years he was a comforter of the long-suffering old generation of the Russian Diaspora; in a Christian way he saw off those, who saw and remembered their Motherland before the tragic break of our history. He also blessed younger generations of our fellow countrymen in Diaspora. Metropolitan Anthony gathered, like an eagle, under his wings all those, who sincerely wanted to become a part of the Holy Orthodoxy in the Diocese of Sourozh. And now, "full of days" (Job 42:17), the blessed hierarch peacefully crossed the threshold of life eternal, only 5 days after his "retirement".
After the service Metropolitan Filaret had a talk with the clergy of the Sourozh Diocese, during which he passed the primatial blessing of Patriarch Alexis to the participants of the meeting and expression of the Patriarch's deep sorrow for the bereavement of the Diocese of Sourozh and the whole Russian Orthodox Church. Metropolitan Filaret handed over to Bishop of Sergievo Basil (Osborn) the Patriarch's Decree about his appointment Ruling bishop of Sourozh Diocese of Moscow Patriarchate.
On behalf of the clergy and faithful of the Diocese of Sourozh Bishop Basil of Sergievo asked Metropolitan Filaret to render Patriarch Alexis deep filial gratitude for the moving words of sympathy and spiritual support in the days of sorrow and grief, for the prayers for the deceased Sourozh archpastor and for the blessing of Vladyka exarch to participate in the funeral service and internment of Metropolitan Anthony. Bishop Basil also asked him to assure the Patriarch of Metropolitan Anthony's coworkers and spiritual children being faithful to his memory, his ministry, and his tradition.
