Cyprus President: Turkey should be confronted as an occupation force

Nicosia, Marth 26, 2012

Cyprus commemorated Sunday with various events the 25th of March 1821, when the Greek Revolution officially started aiming to free Greece from 400 years of Ottoman occupation.
In Nicosia, Archbishop of the Church of Cyprus Chrysostomos II led a doxology at the Faneromeni Church in the presence of President Christofias and House President Yiannakis Omirou, Greece’s Ambassador in Nicosia Vassilios Papaioannou, members of the Council of Ministers, Cypriot Members of the Parliament, Cypriot Members of the European Parliament, government and party officials, as well as other diplomats.

After the doxology, a pupils’ parade was held in front of the Greek Embassy in Nicosia.

Speaking after the parade, President Christofias said ''I would like to address a warm message of support to the Greek people and the political leadership and to thank at the same time, because despite the trials Greece undergoes, stands unwavering at the side of Cyprus and to its struggle against occupation and the reunification of our country and people''.

President Christofias said we should find ways to persuade the international community as well as the European Union to confront Turkey as an occupation force which violates the international law and the human rights of the people of Cyprus and to exert pressure and influence to follow another policy.

''There is no other way and this should be understood by all'', he added.
