A Demonstration is Held Against the Destruction of a Church

June 5, 2012

On June 4, 2012, a demonstration was held in Casablanca, Morocco, against the destruction of Dormition of the Mother of God Russian Orthodox Church, built by Russian emigres in 1958. This is one of two remaining Russian Orthodox churches in the Kingdom of Morocco.

Among the participants of the action, which was sanctioned by the Casablanca authorities, were old and new Russian emigres, Russian specialists working in Morocco, members of the diplomatic corps of Russia and Ukraine to Morocco, Moroccan nationals familiar with Russian culture, their wives, Orthodox and Protestant Christians, Muslims and others who care about the preservation of cultural and religious monuments and sites, as reported on the church’s Facebook page. One of the results of this demonstration is that now there is a 24-hour-a-day vigil around the church.
