Staff worker of the Theophany Cathedral killed in bombardment of Horlivka

Horlivka, Donbass, the Ukraine, February 13, 2015

On February 13 during artillery shelling of the Eastern Ukrainians city of Horlivka, a worker of the city’s Theophany Cathedral Sergei Vladimirovich Luchenko was killed. He was 44. He had a wife and two children, reports the Horlivka and Sloviansk Diocese’s website.

    

May the Lord remember His servant Sergei in His Kingdom. The diocese is asking to pray for the newly-departed!

According to the official data of the Horlivka city health department, as a result of heavy artillery shelling on February 12, the day before, two Horlivka residents were injured and four killed; among those killed were three children.

The intensive bombardments of Horlivka by artillery of the Armed Forces of the Ukraine have been taking place incessantly since mid-January. Nearly every day civilian residents of all ages become victims of these brutal shellings.

On January 2, 2015, the patronal feast was celebrated by the community of the destroyed Church of St. John of Kronstadt in Kirovskoye – a town on which shells had been fired every day until the last truce was concluded.

Some of them are almost completely destroyed: for example, the Iveron Convent, the Church of St. John of Kronstadt are in ruins, churches of Makiivka and Ilovaisk are severely damaged.

On Friday the Iveron Convent of Donetsk was shelled with incendiaries. A block house was burned down.

Despite the fact that many churches of the war-torn districts of Donbass are destroyed, the faithful keep praying and are continuing the liturgical life on ruins of their shrines.
