Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia has clarified his position on human rights which elicited a critical response.

"What a noise has arisen! And I just said a simple thing, not doubting human rights. I just said that if we make human rights an absolute measure of truth, then there will be no truth: so many heads, so many minds," the patriarch said speaking on Tuesday in the Moscow City Duma.

He said that if a person has no higher ideals except for rights, "then he will use these rights to gratify himself."

According to the patriarch, in such a context "the philosophy of deifying man, when a man makes himself into a god, there can't be any love," including in family relations.

In his recent sermon in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior the patriarch call for the defense of Orthodoxy from "the global heresy of worshipping man, the new idolatry that removes God from human life." He pointed out that "efforts are being made in many prosperous countries to establish by law a person's right to any choice, including the most sinful ones, those that contradict God's word, the concept of holiness, and the concept of God."

These words caused a response. Some in the media reproached the patriarch for neglecting human rights.
