Last year on Pascha, Sunday May 1, a fire ravaged the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Sava in New York. Fire marshals were able to determine that the fire was not malicious, but that the 160-year-old building located at West 25th Street had burned due to candles left burning by a caretaker.

The parish has been running a fundraising campaign since then, and there have been various benefit events over the past year.

Now, the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia has announced that the St. Sava’s community will be celebrating Pascha at the Russian Synodal Cathedral of Our Lady “of the Sign” in New York. Over 700 faithful are expected to attend the service celebrated by His Grace Bishop Irinej of the Serbian Eastern American Diocese.

Paschal Matins and Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at midnight by Metropolitan Hilarion and Bishop Nicholas of ROCOR, with the Serbian service beginning at 10 AM. The miraculous Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God “of the Sign” will be present at both services.
