Conservator, Marie Sviergula holds a fragment of a Quran manuscript in the library at the University of Birmingham in Britain, July 22, 2015. A British university said on Wednesday that fragments of a Quran manuscript found in its library were from one of the oldest surviving copies of the Islamic text in the world, possibly written by someone who might have known the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Radiocarbon dating indicated that the parchment folios held by the University of Birmingham in central England were at least 1,370 years old, which would make them one of the earliest written forms of the Islamic holy book in existence. New information surrounding the oldest discovered written version of the Quran, the Islamic holy text, has led some scholars to believe it was compiled for Egypt's first mosque.

"It's the most important discovery ever for the Muslim world," declared Jamal bin Huwareib, managing director of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation, in a BBC News report on Wednesday.

The story concerns 1,370-year-old fragments of the world's oldest Quran uncovered by the University of Birmingham in the U.K. earlier this year, which made international news.

Researchers like Huwareib are now claiming there is evidence that the written work was commissioned by Abu Bakr, a companion of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, for Egypt's oldest mosque, the Mosque of Amr ibn al-As in Fustat.

The BBC report noted that academics were able to determine that the Birmingham manuscript is an exact match of other Quran fragments held at the National Library of France, which are known to have been kept at the Mosque of Amr ibn al-As.

There has been some dispute over the exact dating of the Birmingham fragments, however, with some British scholars suggesting that the written work actually predates the founding of Islam by Muhammad.

"This gives more ground to what have been peripheral views of the Quran's genesis, like that Muhammad and his early followers used a text that was already in existence and shaped it to fit their own political and theological agenda, rather than Muhammad receiving a revelation from Heaven," Keith Small of Oxford's Bodleian Library said back in August.

Mustafa Shah of the University of London's School of Oriental and African Studies disputed the allegation, however.

"If anything, the manuscript has consolidated traditional accounts of the Quran's origins," Shah said.

Radiocarbon testing is placing the date of the manuscript somewhere between 568 and 645, which leaves the question up for debate – as the recorded death of Muhammad is in 632.

David Thomas, Birmingham University's professor of Christianity and Islam, suggested it is possible the writer of the oldest Quran might have known the Islamic prophet.

Huwareib, who has visited Birmingham to examine the manuscript, said that he believes Abu Bakr commissioned the Quran that the fragments belong to.

"This version, this collection, this manuscript is the root of Islam, it's the root of the Quran," he said. "This will be a revolution in studying Islam."

Huwaireb added that the discovery of the "priceless manuscript" in the U.K. rather than in a Muslim country suggests it is a sign of a call for tolerance between religions.

"We need to respect each other, work together, we don't need conflict," he said.

Thomas argued that the discussion and research will continue, however, as academics will seek to narrow down the possible date of the manuscript even further.

This articles seems to have been crafted and it is not to be believed in as a true, if it is true, I am of the opinion that its link should be given enabling the muslim community to read it and after that they can comment on its authenticity. How one can comment on it until it is read. It seems to be out of question that from which University it is found. If the Holy Quran is found in the Church and Muslim Community say that it is not to believed as it is found from there. The Holy Quran is the Holy Quran we have to obey it with our heart and soul as the Holy and Last Prophet Muhammad SAWW did obey it.

The book which came before or after the Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) is not the quraan... Quraan is what the Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) said and was then written..!

Nothing holy about the Quran; a book of much evil and contradiction that flies in the face of the living God.

The following comments are given as a personal observation. Why does anyone consider that this presentation has any value or use except that it is a very small segment of history which places it in the Christian era. It is by admission, an assembly of jumbled text - which has been edited to include the changes which allow a supposed "prophet" to gain his own warped concept of human behavior as an input for human mass control. My history as a Christian has exposed me to a more reliable beginning and have One God as an original initiator of all mankind and environs. There is no magic involved and personal beliefs and dedicated behavior according to GOD'S will is all that is required for personal development and achievements. There is one document The Bible(translated)that is used with great care to maintain authenticity which contains(THE WORD). The Ten Commandments consists of GOD'S instructions and We are all directed to follow them.GOD is LOVE and eternal. Record of man is made and will be judged based on his life behavior in the end - which is known only by GOD and is descried in the Bible! Man is directed to spread the Word, respect and love all things! AMEN!!!

Who really cares and what does it matter? Islam is a false doctrine and an attempt by second rate Arabs to undermine the primacy of the Torah and The New Testament. Nothing Islam has produced is any shape or form original. One only has to travel to muslim countries and see the filth, squalor and mental backwardness of its people to know it is a moribund culture in its death throes.

I'm in total agreement with Jack Perry. "Jack Perry: Well, there is a slight problem with this timeline. Muhammad started in 622 AD, died in 632 AD and it's claimed that the book was revealed and put to written form during his lifetime. Claiming the oldest is 1370 years means that the oldest written version is 645 AD which is 13 years after the death of Muhammad; which puts it squarely into the realm of time when Uthman was the Caliphate and thus the true author of the book. The story goes that Uthman ordered the burning of all other versions of the book. So Moslems or Daesh are living a lie in that they are really Uthmanians, but that would make their murderous cult just that a murderous cult."

Please we all in the World need to know if this early book speakes of peace by Islamics or constant murders of none Islamics, did Mohamed change this book to violence to all none Islamics.

The article doesn't state if the ink and the parchment were tested. Testing the ink gives a more accurate time of the writing yet each article I read tends to gloss over the testing method, including this one.. It's a big omission on a big claim..

The title is a shamefully unscientific and subliminal. The manuscript is "at least" 1,370 years of age which is LATER to the Muslim claimed first day of the start of revelation to Muhammad. Here is quick timeline on Muhammad's lifetime Georgian-ized from Hijri calendar ( -3 years margin of error) 571 (1,444 years ago) - Muhammad was born. 611 (1,404 years ago) - Muhammad received the first revelation and started his ministry. 622 (1,393 years ago) - Muhammad immigrated from Makkah to Madina. 634 (1,381 years ago) - Muhammad passed away. The manuscript is 1,370 years old, composed just 11 years after the death of Muhammad. In fact the manuscript is supporting the Muslim claim rather than refuting it. Especially when its content is IDENTICAL to the Quran version we have today in our hands. A modern-day Arabic reader can still read it and make sure for oneself it is of the same verbatim context!! Just amazing!!

Muslims don't respect the kafir and we will never respect the Islam.
