Church in Foam Lake, Canada Marks 100 year Anniversary

Regina, July 1, 2010

On June 27, 2010, the parishioners of the church of St. Onuphry the Great, one of the churches belonging to the Moscow Patriarchate in Canada, celebrated its one hundred year anniversary, reports the communications services of the Moscow Patriarchate Department of External Church Relations.

Divine services on the festive day were presided over by Bishop Job of Kashira, the ruling bishop of the Canada parishes. Archpriest Igor Kisel and Priest George Sergeev concelebrated. At the end of the service, Bishop Job congratulated the many faithful who had come to pray. The service concluded with a moleben with a blessing of the waters, and a cross procession. A litia was served for the reposed founders and parishioners of the church.

Afterwards was a festive common meal and concert by the parish choir, attended by over one hundred people, many of whom travelled hundreds of miles from neighboring Canadian provinces. Bishop Job gave the parish council and parishioners a Patriarchal grammota, as well as a hierarchical grammota for the active members of the parishioners, reports the press service of the Patriarchal parishes in Canada.

The Church of St. Onuphry the Great is located near the town of Foam Lake, Saskatchewan province. It was founded by peasants who emigrated to that part of Canada at the beginning of the twentieth century, mainly from Bukovina (Western Ukraine). In 1910 a wooden church was built. In 1924, the parishioners began the construction of a new, larger church, which was finished in 1925. There are currently ten parishioners. Divine services are celebrated four times per year by Archpriest Igor Kisel, priest of the Moscow Patriarchate's Canada parishes. There is also a cemetery and parish house on the property.
