No incidents were reported during Christmas celebrations in Moscow, with divine services held in the Russian capital's 268 churches, Moscow police spokesman Viktor Biryukov said.

"Some 80,000 people attended the capital's churches early on Friday. Outdoor festivities took place on Tsvetnoi Boulevard. Police ensured law and order at all sites," Biryukov said.

He said more than 5,000 people attended Patriarch Kirill's service in the Christ the Savior Cathedral.

The Russian, Jerusalem, Serbian and Georgian Orthodox churches, Athos monasteries, some Catholics and some Protestants celebrate Christmas on January 7 in line with the Julian calendar.

Roman Catholics, Lutherans, Anglicans and some Orthodox churches celebrate the feast on December 25.
