Brittany curé defends chapel against voodoo exhibition

Rennes, February 28, 2012

The curé of a Catholic parish in Pommerit-Jaudy (Côtes-d’Armor, Brittany) threatened not to serve the traditional “Forgiveness Mass” on Semptember 9, 2012 in the chapel of St. Anthony. The reason for the priest’s protest is a plan of the local authorities to stage an exhibition of voodoo masks in the ancient chapel, reports Sedmitza.ru.

The venue of the exhibition was suddenly changed to the mayor’s office.

Philippe Roche, the cure of the cathedral in Tréguier and rector of the community of Saint-Tugdual announced he would refuse to serve the Forgiveness Mass scheduled for September 9 if the exhibition of the pagan voodoo cult objects should take place as originally scheduled from March 1 to April 6, 2012.

The priest cited newspaper clippings announcing the exhibition, which state that the displays are to be dedicated to “ancestor cults” and the “mighty foremother Iyà Nià”, the “great mother who orders the world”.

The priest was aghast at the plans to conduct an openly pagan display within the walls of a Catholic chapel and did everything within his power to prevent the desecration.
