Court in Tula rules letter of deceased Orthodox priest as extremist

Tula, 20 February, 2013

The court in the town of Novomoskovsk in the Tula region has ruled that the letter of an Orthodox priest, Vasily Novikov, from the village of Ivankovo in the Kimovsk district is extremist literature, according to Interfax-Religion.

Leaflets with Fr. Vasily’s letter were given out during his funeral in November 2010, as reported to Interfax by the press service of the regional management of the legal department on Wednesday.

At his memorial service, two local residents gave out leaflets entitled Orthodoxy or death, signed by the priest. According to the official conclusion, there are extremist statements in the printed matter presented, and therefore the Novomoskovsk prosecutor has submitted an appeal to the town court.

The court has ruled that the leaflets are extremist and has resolved to confiscate his testament.

The Tula Diocese had earlier provided information that Fr. Vasily had been forbidden to serve, that his activity “is entirely his own invention and its characteristics are very much sectarian.”

The priest discouraged parishioners of the village from obtaining Russian passports, seeing in them the number of the devil, as well as tax numbers, and suspected the imminent end of the world.
