Carl Marx monument dismantled in Penza to free space for future cathedral

Penza, July 14, 2011

Pre-revolutionary Penza. Pre-revolutionary Penza.
A monument to Carl Marx at Sovetskaya Square in downtown Penza was dismantled to make way for a church to replace the one blown up on that spot by the Communists in 1934, Interfax – Religion reports, citing representatives from the Penza diocese.

"A part of the Cathedral of the Savior will occupy this part of the square, and its construction is underway," the representative told the agency.

The foundation site will soon be excavated.

The decision to move the monument was taken by the city administration. There are plans to move it to Carl Marx Street.

The world's first monument to Marx was erected in Penza on May 1, 1918, but it crumbled, as it was made of clay. In November 1960, a new monument was erected here—a two-meter bronze bust on a six-meter granite stand.

The cathedral complex will be built on the place of the church built in 1800-1824.
